LA backyard home is built-ins gem with solstice windows (Stonehenge-like)
Writer/director Wash Westmoreland wanted to turn his rundown garage behind his LA home into a home/studio that could fulfill many roles: rental apartment, writing cottage and full-size screening room. Architect John Colter left the facade of the garage intact to disguise it from the street, but once you step inside, the space expands Tardis-like into a light-filled multifunctional home.
- 3:12: check the "summer solstice" windows, which operate like the Paleolithic monument of Stonehenge, perfectly aligning with the sun's movements during the solstice.
Initially Westmoreland wanted a space to write, as well as for overnight guests and to rent it when he was out of town filming. "The thought...

Oldtimer builds rustic ecovillage in US's southernmost point

About 40 years ago, William bought 1.25 acres for $6000 on the Big Island of Hawaii and began growing his own food and building his own shelters. He was inspired to leave his native Wisconsin for a place where it would be easier to live off the land. Today he lives with only solar power (with an array built from recycled panels), without a car (he uses an electric trike or carpools), without a ...

Ethan Liebross didn't want to take out more loans for medical school so he decided to convert a 2015 Ford Transit into an off-grid home to live in for his four years of school. With some help from his dad on the off grid system, Ethan worked 9-to-5 for two months to create a vehicle with the details of a modern home: butcher block countertops, custom-cut memory foam mattress, a gas range and a ...
Biokabin: our modular eco-home to snap & build in backyard, Nature
Просмотров 116 тыс.Месяц назад
People have asked us over the years, "if you were to build a simple home, what would it look like?" So we decided to build one. Enter Biokabin, a modular eco-home made of wood. At first we didn't know everything about it, but we were sure that house needed to belong to the place, to be healthy and to age well. But the real challenge was: could we build it ourselves without fancy tools, and to c...

Mitch Marks bought agricultural land on The Big Island of Hawaii in 1990 and years later when he was retiring from teaching he decided to give farming a go. Cameron and Janeen Schiff built their dream home out of trash and salvage, but it took 16 years to put it together by hand. How do you seal up the leading edge of the metal roofing towards the front from rain when going down the highway? Also at the ridge cap on front edge? Seems like rain would find it's way in under the corrugations of the metal roofing.

For some reason I feel like some people no longer need trees. When you cut down all the trees and the UV-rays get all the way to the surface because there's no shade, it heats the crust more and it stores that heat more and then transfers it into ocean-temperature. When you're all dead, they're going to grow the trees back and cool the planet. That's all it would take. Also, deforestation next to the shoreline causes hurricanes to maintain their strength much farther inland. You can steer them by where there are no tress or land-features. NY and Washington DC are going to be underwater in fifty-years and who's building for that, practically enough? No one. They are consolidating us all to the shorelines of every country in areas that will eventually be underwater, where they will trigger a final event that will cause the majority of the rest of the remaining humanity to die in large cities. The ocean-rise will be their tomb and recycling plant for their dead, stank-ass bodies. That is their plan, yes. If I thought they had the best intentions for everyone, I would be kissing their butts to join them. Yet, they're too incompetent to effectively act upon or desire good intentions, and actively prevent the rest of us from doing this, as well. What three-year-old ruling this planet is pretending to be our parents?

I couldn't help my daughter financially after my divorce, so she ended up living in our family trailer in the parking area of a friend's mountain cabin 20 minutes from her university. He let her plug into water, sewer, and even his electricity, for which I will always be grateful. I gave her $50 a week for food and her dad paid for her gasoline, and that's how she lived for 2 years. She is now a Physician's Associate (PA) and doing fantastically well. The dedication of these young people with goals is inspiring.

The long-term adverse effects of Reagan's voodoo economics on our culture and society have been devastating. The proliferation of drug abuse, declining levels of higher education in the American workforce, increasing dependence on welfare, food stamps, etc. Reagan was NOT a conservative. He was a destroyer of the American middle class as it had been thriving and growing since the late 40s through the 70s. He promoted isolated examples of welfare fraud to destroy public assistance. At the same time, his trickle-down economics were destroying the middle-class incomes of many millions of American families. Trickle-down economics is a mask for the autocratic rule of oligarchs. Reagan used his movie star fame to put a trusted face on the arrogant domination of the wealthy few over the many, a throwback to the abuses of power that America's founders rebelled against.
